I can handle a blizzard on Spring Break.

I can handle these silly Yankees and their putting things "away" instead of putting them "up".

In fact I have learned to handle a lot of things about living in a small Northern town.

But what I can't understand about this God-forsaken place is its alarming shortage of Vanilla Coke. It's not enough that not a single vending machine on campus has vanilla Coke. None of our like 3 stores in town have it either. Do these people not feel? If we cut them, do they not bleed? And yet how do they manage without Vanilla Coke? Granted, there was Diet vanilla coke for about 2 weeks and I survived, but now, not even that. I don't even drink vanilla coke that often. I just like to have my fix every month or so.

Damn Yankees.

My shopping story

Oh! I forgot to write about something earlier and I figure instead of editing I would just write a new entry and make it public because it is an amazing story.

Ok, so yesterday was my shopping day. I went to McCain mall which usually has enough stuff that I want I could easily spend $500 or more. But it seemed like none of the stores had anything at all. I only spent like $50. Well, this was not good because I was shopping for 4 months so I needed to find more clothes. So I went to Lakewood village. And in one of the stores I went to I found the cutest skirt I have ever seen. There were only 3 left and one happened to be my size. I looked at the price and it was originally $45. Guess how much I paid?!?

$5!!!!!! Isn't that incredible? That's what makes 8 hours of shopping worth it. Of course the lady forgot to take the little round thing off that I guess is supposed to prevent it from being stolen so I guess I have to take it back to the store before I can wear it.

In the meantime though I am going to put my debit card in the freezer so it can cool off because I spent a lot of money total. However, I keep telling myself that it was 4 months worth of crap so I'm allowed.

God, I feel so bad for the people of London. Right after they find out they get to host the 2012 Olympics and then this shit hits them. The weird thing is I first found out about this from Deutsche Welle this morning. It was scrolling on the bottom of the screen and I read it and I was all like 'man, my german is getting really bad. Here I am reading about double decker bus explosions in London. Maybe I should go back to German 1' And then I was right! I was almost more shocked about being right then the fact that it actually happened.

But I feel just terrible for them.

So I hate to be such a philistine but I am having some doubts about the people in the fine arts industry. There seems to be very little effort to cast people in a role that matches their gender. I first noticed this when I was watching the English National Opera's performance of Xerxes. They cast a female soprano in the role of Xerxes who is of course a male king. What was even stranger was that Xerxes brother was played by a man who like sang in a falsetto the entire time so he sounded like a girl also. They had some nice baritone voices but the directors didn't feel led to put one of these men in the lead role. Then I saw ENO's production of Ariodante and the SAME woman played Ariodante (also a male) and the same falsetto man was playing a guy but singing ridiculously high. So I was like whatever, maybe this woman is sleeping with someone that gets her all these title roles even though they are the opposite gender.

Then today I was watching Dido and Aeneas. It was a very interesting performance because it was not acted out by the vocalists like operas usually are. Instead the vocalists were off screen and a ballet troup danced the story. I think that is much more practical because there is not much acting to do when you have a 3 minute arpeggio just to say good bye but you can get a whole lot of dancing done in a 3 minute arpeggio. I think it was a little difficult for the dancers because there are no natural cues like there are in scores that are written for a ballet. Either that or they sucked because they kept missing their cues by little bits.

Anyway back to the gender thing. So Dido is a girl right? The queen of Carthage. And Aeneas is some Trojan guy. Well the voices matched up with the characters but the dancers did not. They had this really masculine dude playing Dido. It was so strange! I mean they put forth almost no effort to conceal the fact that he was a man. I'm not talking a sex change, I'm talking shaving the hair under his arms, plucking his eyebrows and giving him some long sleeves to cover up his enormous muscles. He was almost bigger than Aeneas who had to lift him up a coupld of times (which means you could see his huge legs). And those love scenes... that man must either be really gay or really secure in his masculinity. The only practical purpose I could see for this is that one time Dido lifted like two other dancers up but what the hell is the queen of Carthage doing lifting up her servants?!?

So my question is, why is this so acceptable in the fine arts world? I mean if you are going to make a DVD of a production it seems like you would go to the effort to make sure that at least your main characters would fit their genders, or at least try to get closer to it. Even the guy playing the pirate looked more feminane than Dido.

Maybe they are trying to remove focus from the actual story and focus on the performance?

Today at work I heard this little boy talking something about dying but instead of saying 'when I die' he was saying 'when I get killed'. He was old enough to know the difference and I just thought it was strange that this kid just assumes he is going to be murdered.

Yikes.
